Once every three months I list the best of what I heard in albums/songs/remixes for the quarter. I do this to personally keep up with all the awesome music I hear, as it ultimately helps me at the end of the year when I do my overall listing for the previous twelve months. I also do it to introduce you cool cats to tunes you may have missed independently.

50. Surfer Blood – Miranda
To whet our appetite in between LPs, Surfer Blood released a rocking little EP featuring this excellent little tune.
49. Starsmith – Lesson One
Another band I know little about, but this played nonstop in my car last spring. A great ode to the unrequited and the ones that got away.
48. Cloud Nothings – Understand At All
Another catchy lo-fi power pop rocker from this group’s self-titled debut. Enjoy it while you can, because the follow-up promises to be darker and more ambitious.
47. Kreayshawn – Gucci Gucci
This Internet sensation crept onto FM radio with this undeniable, absolutely fun track. Bonus points for rhyming “over me” with “ovaries.”
46. Born Gold – Decimate Everything
My first introduction to the newly named Born Gold, and I was immediately hooked. There is a remarkable gift here in making the unorganized sound so irresistible.

2010
This year I made the big move from Lubbock to Austin, and the transformation has done wonders for my live music fix. I should have been writing down all the awesome bands I saw this year (and the years before, for that matter) but alas, hindsight, she is 20/20 once again. I think this post covers the highlights more or less, however. There’s plenty of great live music I saw this year that I’m leaving out, but after the jump, in no particular order, are twelve of the best shows I witnessed in 2010, eleven of them right here in the Live Music Capital of the World.
And for the record, I wanted to put the Sleigh Bells show on here, as fun as it was once they finally started playing, but everyone who attended knows Beauty Bar is at fault for that show’s omission. What a disaster.

Today I continue my ongoing feature showcasing my personal picks for the best songs of the past decade, posting ten songs at a time.
130. Flaming Lips – Do You Realize?
Just a couple of days ago, I talked about how awesome this song is, but as fate would have it, the list compels me to elaborate. In three-and-a-half glorious minutes, Wayne Coyne sums up our life….or at least it feels like he does. With a simple question, he gives the most personal compliment to everyone listening, then continues to examine the beauty we take for granted – the sun, our friendships, our life. It’s a sweet call for a simple enjoyment of who we are and what we’re doing, in this very moment of our fleeting lives. Because it’s hard to make the good things last….
