My Top 300 Songs of the 2000s – 80-71

Today I continue my ongoing feature showcasing my personal picks for the best songs of the past decade, posting ten songs at a time.

80. The White Stripes – Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground

The opening track from White Blood Cells squeals to life, Jack White’s guitar screeching into a staple new-blues riff before Meg pounds in and all hell breaks loose.  For many, it would be the first we would hear from this Detroit duo, and first impressions have a lasting impact.  Jack and Meg needn’t worry – they certainly got our attention.

Paragraph Reviews 12/10/10

Music, Movies, Television, etc. Pop culture reviews for the short-attention-span Internet age.

Love and Other Drugs

Watch the two-minute green band trailer and you know exactly how this movie goes, more or less.  Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway fall in love, separate, and get back together again.  Welcome to the standard rom-com formula, unchanged since the beginning of time.  That’s not to say the movie isn’t enjoyable (up until the trite ending, which everyone sees a mile away); there is great chemistry between Gyllenhaal’s take on a career-minded, smart-ass, sweet-talking med salesman and Hathaway’s sarcastic, quasi-misanthropic, surprisingly charming twenty-something with Parkinson’s.  Add a dash of breasts, a ton of male ass, and many many boner jokes (the character is selling Viagra, after all), and you’ve got a decent date movie, even if the first third (which is mainly focused on career moves and less on romance) is more interesting than the eye-roll-worthy rest.

My Top 300 Songs of the 2000s – 280-271

Today I continue my ongoing feature showcasing my personal picks for the best songs of the past decade, posting ten songs at a time.

280. Say Anything – Wow! I Can Get Sexual Too

At this point I feel I need to make a quick reminder (especially to my music snob friends) that a lot of the songs in this list are not really songs I listen to on a regular basis.  Most of them are here for nostalgic purposes and to give a perspective of my preference and its evolution over the past ten years.  Having stated that, I love all these songs; they all hold a special place in my….uh, music heart.  And, as they say, much like most countdowns, as the numbers get smaller, the hits get bigger.  So hang in there, hipsters!

That being said, this song is really dumb.  The lyrics are stupid, in a Bloodhound Gang kind of way (look for them later in the list, kids!), and this band really does nothing for me.  But when this song came out, I rocked this bitch like it was “Stairway to Heaven.”  And just try not to smile once while listening.  The guy’s voice is humorously absurd, much like the story he’s telling.

Quarterly Review: January-March 2010

Today I begin a new feature at Culture Greyhound.  Once every three months I will be listing the best of what I heard in albums/songs/remixes for the quarter.  I do this to personally keep up with all the awesome music I hear, as it ultimately helps me at the end of the year when I do my overall listing for the previous twelve months.  I also do it to introduce you cool cats to tunes you may have missed independently.
