Once every three months I list the best of what I heard in albums/songs/remixes for the quarter. I do this to personally keep up with all the awesome music I hear, as it ultimately helps me at the end of the year when I do my overall listing for the previous twelve months. I also do it to introduce you cool cats to tunes you may have missed independently.
Hard to believe, but the excellent Lisbon came out two years ago. And The Walkmen have already created what will likely be a worthy follow up. Heaven, the band’s new album, drops on June 5th, and features a guest appearance from Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes. Leader Hamilton Leithauser has stated the new album is a “bigger, more generous statement” than previous albums.

As far as posting goes, I’m pretty late to the game on this one. I suppose December serves as the month I catch up on all the good stuff I didn’t get a chance to mention before, or only mentioned in passing.
The Walkmen’s track record is impeccable, and Lisbon is no exception. The group is as gloomy as ever, and the slightly progressive approach to their signature sound pays off. I am looking forward to hearing the new material live at Stubb’s in March. Below is a sampling of some of my favorite tracks from the new record, epic and grandiose and depressing and brilliant all at once.
