Anyone who’s followed the blog/my life knows I’m a big fan of lists/countdowns/theme mixes, so it should come as no shock to most that I’m in love with the list mashup phenom Girl Talk (aka Greg Gillis) has shared in celebration of the beginning of summer 2011. Â Speaking with Vulture (where you can find the entire list and accompanying YouTube videos), Gillis explains the overall feel of the mix and its rise-and-chill vibe, an argument I’m inclined to agree with:
“Over half of these songs you would like to party to, and the other half are songs you relax to. That’s the essence of summertime– you can be sitting around drinking beer outside or you can be up celebrating.”
Star Slinger, one of my consistent favorites, has posted a new mix for the Yours Truly blog, and it’s banging, as is customary for anything Star Slinger does. Listen below.
Happy Friday! Tonight at midnight, the government may very well shut down because the GOP wishes to throw women’s rights under the bus. Surprise! Â Here’s a mix I’ve compiled in celebration of our country’s (and our economy’s) impending doom.
Last night my ripe old age of 24 caught up with my youthful antics; while attempting to “bust a move” and “get my freak on” at Barbarella, I hyper-extended my knee.
Pause for laughter….
Needless to say, today’s activities have consisted of popping ibuprofen, elevating my leg, alternating between ice packs and hot towels, and limping around like a drunken homeless man. Hopefully I can lick this thing before the One Wolf show on Sunday, but until then, I have created a small but suitable playlist dedicated to my left knee, which at the moment is swollen to the size of a grapefruit.
Up until about a month ago, I lived in the blue part of that “map” up there – I recently transferred to deep in the red, but I have been a Texan my whole life. And there’s no place like it. Anyone visiting will tell you: there’s something about the Lone Star State, a vibe, a sense of pride you can’t find anywhere else in the Union, or the world for that matter. And I don’t plan on leaving anytime soon.
One of the best things about Texas is the music – from the country background of our capital to the rock and roll roots of the South Plains, to the Dirty South “Screwston” scene, to the metal movement based in DFW. Harlem, Willie, Buddy, Pantera, Paul Wall, we’ve got it all. I invite you to listen to the new mix Subservient Experiment has posted featuring only the finest in the state’s indie rock offerings. It’s an awesome sampling of great tunes from such a huge land mass, and it has inspired me to make my own mix.
So enjoy a helping of tracks from the friendliest region on the planet. I think you’ll agree: everything’s bigger in Texas, even the sounds.
Yes, indeed. Spring is upon us, and with it comes spring break, usually the best week of the entire year. This year, for me, will be spent the same way I have spent every spring break for the past three years – at SXSW. Posting on the blog will probably be a little spotty, so in lieu of that, I have compiled a small compilation of mostly new, mostly upbeat tracks to get you into the best season of the year. Here’s to Spring Break 2010: may yours be as awesome as mine will be.
